Confusion Over Smoking Ban

JEDDAH: The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has said it is not responsible for setting up a mechanism that could be used by people to pay their fines for smoking in the Kingdom’s airports.

A GACA source said the aviation body is handing out fines to violators and that setting up the mechanism is the responsibility of the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Health and the National Information Center.

The source said violations would not appear in people’s accounts until a payment mechanism is formed, adding the system will be set up in the coming days.

Dozens of violations have been recorded but because of the absence of a mechanism, the violations have not been recorded in people’s accounts. One hundred and forty violations have been recorded so far at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah.
